Nexus 7 2012 Receives Android 4.4.2 Update-Kit Kat - Review

Google Nexus 7 [Wifi] 2012 Receives the 4.4.2 Update Kit Kat-Review

Google has no intention to slow down. They have just rolled out a new bug-fix and maintenance update for its Nexus line of devices (Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013) and Nexus 10) via Android 4.4.2 KOT49H KitKat official firmware. The new KitKat firmware brings security enhancements and performance improvements over its previous release (Android 4.4.1 KOT49E).

In September, Google announced that it would be rolling out an Android 4.4 KitKat update at some point in the future. In October, after several weeks of rumors, Android 4.4 KitKat was announced alongside the Nexus 5, and a short time later it started rolling out for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10. unfortunately for the Galaxy Nexus , it met its end with 4.3 JellyBean.

List of fixes in this version;

  • Fix for clearing the VM Indicator
  • Fix for delivery of the VM Indicator
  • Various additional software fixes
  • Security enhancements
  • Fix for SMS DoS bug
The update for Nexus 7 was sized at 39MB. Update took less than 5 minutes to complete. Process went smooth.

For the nexus 7 ,i cant say that there was any epic changes but, nonetheless, everything is working finely. No lags and any bugs are yet to be noticed. I an say that the animations are a little bit fluid than 4.4.

But Some apps aren't yet optimized with 4.4.2. MX player crashes, so does Mobo player and some other apps. MX player hasn't put forward any updates with 4.4.2 support. That's a bummer. It was the perfect video player for android. Also those MX guys are always late with updates. They are sure to bring it up sooner or later.

Next Up is Benchmarking:

Now let's test the performance of the nexus 7 2012 in 4.4.2 Kit Kat

1. Antutu Benchmark

Antutu is one of the famous benchmarking utlities available. They test the overall performance of devices.

Result:

Antutu Benchmark score is about 13839. Which was far better than stock and 4.3 JellyBean which had a score of 12012 .The score change was negligible from 4.4 Kit Kat .
Performance of the Nexus 7 is close to HTC OneX. But Benchmarks dont have the last words. they are just a way to compare different devices. Nexus 7 is an amazing device.

Scores

  • 4.3 Jelly Bean -12012
  • 4.4.2 Kit Kat  - 13839

2. Quadrant

The quadrant works only for devices having GPUs.

Result:

Nexus 7 scored a score of 3703. Which was great compared to jellybean 4.3 which scored 3517.

Scores

  • 4.3 Jelly Bean - 3517
  • 4.4.2 Kit Kat   - 3703
So the new Kit Kat update was just another bug fixing update, slightly faster than 4.4. Its way better than Jelly Bean 4.3 .

Some apps haven't yet updated themselves to cope with this new update like MX player. As Google was swift in releasing an bug fixing update, not many go the time to update their applications.

It will get a lot better as time progresses. Kit Kat has a great future up ahead, even though Nexus 7 2012 might not. As it reaches it's 2nd birthday, Nexus 7 may get update throughout 2014, but that must be the end of it. As Galaxy Nexus slowly faded, there will be a time when Nexus 7 has to leave as well.

But any how quit worrying and enjoy the Ki Kat Experience.
